Book Review: Over the Line

I’ve previously reviewed the other books in this series so I figured why not! I’ve never been let down by a book series before!

When Dom!Michael sees Sub!Sydney at a scene party, he’s instantly attracted.   Despite the warnings of several of his friends he has to have her.  And not just for a night.  Forever.

Sydney isn’t looking for a long term relationship. She’s definitely not looking for master. She likes being unencumbered. Free.

Can things work out when their two worlds collide?

It took me a long time to put my finger on why I didn’t like this book as much as the other two I’ve reviewed. At first I thought it was because I didn’t connect with the characters as much. Because I definitely didn’t.

But now, while writing this review, I figured out why. It’s because I don’t like the implications inherent in the premise. The guy/dom wants one thing. The woman/sub wants another. Basically the woman has to sacrifice her wants and desires for the man. Change for him. Be what he wants.

I didn’t like this when it came to Grease. I don’t like it here.

And unfortunately there’s literally no way for this premise to work while still staying within the Romance wheelhouse. Someone had to give. I just hate that it had to be the woman/sub.

That doesn’t mean that the book wasn’t good,  it was,  the sex is hot as always and again I like that the author is very honest about what BDSM is and isn’t. This was also a book where I started to notice a flaw in the author’s storytelling. That yes, the boundaries are set, but that the sub never exercises their power. Safe words are set but never used.

But because I didn’t love the book or the characters and because I’m not a fan of the implications in the premise itself.

Three stars.
